Brudis & Associates, Inc. (BAI) provided complete structural engineering services for the inspection, design, preparation of contract documents, and bid/construction phase services for a new overhead roof structure for the Mountain Road Salt Bin. The facility was an existing 40 ft. x 70 ft. open salt bin storage structure with 12 ft. high wood framed walls on three sides. The Anne Arundel County Bureau of Highways was required to provide a roof enclosure over the open structure to meet environmental regulatory requirements. The new roof design also included new lighting fixtures and containment gate.
Structural Inspection/Design. BAI inspected the existing structure to verify existing conditions, measure as-built dimensions, locate above-ground utilities, determine if any repairs were needed to the existing wall framing, and note any other conditions that could impact the proposed construction. BAI performed a structural analysis of the existing salt bin support walls to determine if they could support the new roof loadings. BAI provided structural design and analysis for the new roof enclosure, including new column supports since the existing structure was not designed to support the load of the roof. The structural designs were prepared in accordance with the County building code (2012 International Building Code).
Construction Documents. BAI prepared complete construction documents for the new roof enclosure including lighting for six new surface mounted light fixtures with connections to existing electrical panels. The plans included structural plans and foundation details for the new roof supports, structural sections and details, electrical design plan, and details for a 4 ft. height wood framed containment gate at the bottom of the open end of the existing storage bin.
Bid / Construction Phase Services. BAI assisted the County throughout the bid process by attending a pre-bid meeting, providing written responses to bidders’ questions, preparing addenda, and reviewing bid tabulations. During construction, BAI attended the pre-construction meeting, provided written responses to contractor questions (RFI), reviewed and approved shop drawings and contractor material submittals, provided on-site inspection and consultation for any construction issues, and assisted in documenting project closeout inspections.
