Gold Mine Road Bridge

Designed the replacement bridge and roadway, shared-use path extension, hydrology and hydraulics, maintenance-of-traffic, drainage, and stormwater management.

  • MDOT SHA and Montgomery County DOT
  • Montgomery County, MD
  • $3.8M (Construction)

The structure selected was a single span prestressed concrete slab bridge, and BAI worked with the client & community to provide an aesthetically pleasing cantilever retaining wall. To meet horizontal sight distance requirements, the replacement bridge was shifted 20’+ upstream by increasing the horizontal curvature to be AASHTO compliant. Raised the roadway profile across the bridge by nearly 6’ to pass the 5-year storm event and alleviate frequent flooding of the roadway. To improve bicycle/pedestrian connectivity, designed and obtained permits for an 8’ off-roadside bicycle path that ties into an existing trail. Also provided public outreach and involvement throughout the design to ensure all stakeholders were educated on the proposed design and impacts.
The project was selected as a top 3 finalist for the 2019 MdQI (Maryland Quality Initiative) "Award of Excellence" for Transportation Projects under $5M category.
