The bridge closure resulted in a significant detour for emergency services as the closest detour contained an 1830s stone arch bridge that was unable to carry the emergency vehicles. BAI was the prime engineering consultant responsible for the structural, roadway, erosion and sediment control, stormwater management, and hydraulic design as well as construction support services. Given the short time for substantial completion (8.5 months from the start of design to bridge opening to traffic), the design-build team elected to utilize Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) techniques and methods for replacing the structure and used expedited reviewers for environmental and waterway permits to meet the schedule needs.
The project was awarded the ACEC/MD 2020 Award of Excellence and was a top 3 finalist for the 2019 MdQI “Modal Award under $5M Category” for Transportation Projects.
